Project Ideas

Projects have to be done in groups unless otherwise stated.  For the project, you are expected to identify an area of your interest, in the area of your interest, and study the information systems (remember IT + humans + resources) aspect of it.  At the end of the project, you should be able to discuss the what's, why's, where's, when's, and how's of the information systems.  In an attempt to minimize paper wastage, I prefer electronic documents (Preferably posted as HTML on your websites, except presentations that should be on PowerPoint).   The report should be close to 10 pages not including cover page and table of contents.  Your report should follow following standard format: Cover page, table of contents, executive summary of the project, introduction to the project (what?), body of the project [description of the project (how?),  location or tools that you use or project setting (where?), log of what activities you performed (when?)], conclusions and discussion (why?), and references, presentation.   If any of the red sections above are missing in the report, it will result in lost points.

Below are several suggestions of the topics that are suitable for the project. You can select any of the topic of choice.  I strongly recommend you to narrow down the scope of product and select one specific type of information systems.  The more you narrow down the scope of project, easier it will be for you to understand and explain the concepts to the class.  If you don't like the ideas listed below, you can come up with your own idea and get it approved by me.

•  Below are listed some technology categories that you may draw from.

  • Start trading stocks online by building a stock portfolio on following simulator website  http://simulator.investopedia.com/
  • Set up a private wiki for the class (there are open software's available for this)
  • Set up an online discussion forum on something that interests you and see if you can get some following online by advertising it to your friends etc... (there are open software's available for this).  Some examples of community forums are http://www.flyertalk.com/ for frequent travelers, http://forums.anandtech.com/ for technology discussion, http://www.dpreview.com/forums/ for photography reviews.
  • Wi-Fi/ WiMax/ BOPL (broadband over power lines)
  • Study and setup VOIP (Voice over IP)
  • Make your computer secure and efficient (and tell the class how you did that) e.g. install firewall, set up wireless security, automatic updates, defrag hard drive, install anti-spyware, install anti-virus with automatic updates, clean up your computer, backup your computer, etc etc.
  • Install and review windows vista.
  • Video game comparisons (wii, PS3, XBox360)
  • Set up blog and start writing.  Sign up for google ad sense and see if you can generate some revenue.  You may have to advertise your site at some forums or places like digg.com (ofcourse you will have to write about stuff that people would care to read - remember to learn the etiquettes of the site before posting).
  • Create your profile in http://www.secondlife.com, become an active user, or start a business, and share your experiences. (you may have to read up on this first).
  • Compare and contrast technology recommendation under various scenarios made by popular retailers like circuit city, best buy, staples, etc.
  • Compare and contrast technology usage by popular retailers (e.g. POS technology, self service checkout etc)
